Causes of Mesothelioma

Read on for more information on the potential causes of mesothelioma, including asbestos exposure at work and in the home, and secondary exposure to asbestos, as well as an introduction to mesothelioma compensation claims.

What causes mesothelioma?

Up to "9 in 10 cases of mesothelioma are caused by exposure to asbestos fibres1".

The most common way to come in contact with asbestos is working in construction or refurbishing buildings. Asbestos is not dangerous when it's contained - the danger comes when asbestos is disturbed or broken up, releasing asbestos fibres into the air. These fibres can then be inhaled, or ingested if they mix with food or drink nearby.

It's also possible to come into contact with asbestos when carrying out DIY work at home.

Finally, asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral, and those who worked at, or lived near asbestos mines or processing plants are also at risk of inhaling asbestos fibres if the correct safety measures are not taken.

Mesothelioma compensation claims often relate to asbestos exposure at work. Employers are required by law to take steps to keep their employees safe and healthy at work, so if they allow employees to work with asbestos without knowing it's there, or having the appropriate protective equipment, they are breaking the law.
Men who worked in building or construction in the 1960's and 1970's when asbestos was widely used are most at risk.

Secondary exposure to asbestos

Secondary exposure to asbestos is another cause of mesothelioma, and occurs when someone who works with or near asbestos carries fibres home on their clothes. Their partner or a family member can then unknowingly inhale these fibres and contract mesothelioma as a result.

Mesothelioma compensation claims

Mesothelioma compensation claims can help those who have contracted mesothelioma, as a result of someone else's negligence, get back on their feet financially. This means covering medical expenses and lost earnings if the sufferer has had to take time off work. Compensation can also be recovered to support the sufferer's family and to cover financial expenses.

The amount of compensation awarded in mesothelioma compensation claims will vary, but is significantly larger than the amount awarded in other types of industrial accident claim due to the severity of mesothelioma. If you decide to make a claim, our mesothelioma lawyers will be able to give you an estimate of how much compensation you could be entitled to, based on your situation and past claims.

If you've been diagnosed with mesothelioma, we understand that this is a difficult time for you and your family.  To find out more about your right to compensation, give one of our friendly advisors a call, or chat online using Live Chat.
